In September 2019, Fifth Third Bank began the interior transformation of two floors of its office space at Fifth Third Center Chicago in the heart of West Loop along the Chicago River. The project would deliver the Bank’s transformative workplace design in Chicago where the then recent merger with MB Financial and newly implemented Fifth Third Bank brand was significantly strengthening the Bank’s presence in the Chicago market. The project also included the Bank’s second and largest innovation hub – ONE67 Chicago – built to further advance our digital transformation strategy. 

The Fifth Third construction management team embarked on this transformative journey with the goal of delivering a dynamic employee workplace that continues to advance our digital platforms and further strengthen our commitment to innovation. To meet that goal, a strong, transparent relationship with partners and contractors would be essential to not only deliver the project, but also to embrace the principles of innovation and the strong culture of collaboration that are core to the design. 

The project was completed in phases in order to fulfill accelerated timelines. Floor scan technology was used to assess the structural stability of the location and 3D renderings guided the design process. Using three different furniture partners, the first phase was completed in just over 10 weeks, delivering the ONE67 Chicago innovation hub which includes mobile furniture and walls, flexible lighting, and power sources that can be accessed anywhere on the ceiling. The second phase delivered nearly 70,000 square feet of workspace, completely renovated to include formal meeting rooms, casual soft-seating areas, and the latest technology-enabling productivity tools.

Teams navigated several unique challenges, including creatively transporting key pieces of furniture through passenger elevator shafts. Keeping sustainability top of mind, waste diversion tracking and the use of recycled flooring were implemented during construction, in addition to daylight harvesting, vacancy sensors and recycling receptacles implemented in the finished space. 

As a result of our strong partnerships and innovative construction management methods, a stunning workspace in the heart of Chicago’s Central Business District enables new ways to work and showcases our commitment to innovation in the community.
